Demographics
Description
Demographics are presented
in a number of layers which are based on census block groups. Block
group is a type of 1990 census area geography whose size is between
the larger census tract and the smallest unit of census geography,
census block. Block groups are contiguous aggregations of census
blocks. The LEAN GIS block group data layer was derived by address matching
(georeferencing) the addresses of over 1,750,000 individual food stamp
recipients, then performing a GIS overlay of the recipient locations on
1990 census block groups. Data about individual food stamp recipients
were aggregated for each block group, then attached to the block group
geography as attributes. The aggregation process eliminates the possibility
of showing information about any individual food stamp recipient.
There are a number
of demographic layers available. Block group polygons are color-coded
according to the class (range of values) to which they belong. Look at
the legend to find the value ranges for each demography layer.
Sources of data: Food
Stamp Recipient data was supplied by the Department of Health Services.
Block group demographic estimate data was supplied by EASI, Inc.
Data Grouping Information:
It was necessary to
group race and language data in order to make the Food Stamp Recipient
data comparable to the EASI block group demographic classifications.

*Notes
on Hispanic as a racial category versus an ethnic category
The EASI data considers
Hispanic to be an ethnic, not racial category. It provides estimates for
the White, Black, Asian/Pacific Islander, and Other racial categories;
these add up to the total population for the block group. As a separate
category, EASI provides the estimated Hispanic population. The people
counted in the EASI Hispanic category are also counted in one of
the four racial categories.
The DHS Food Stamp
Recipient data treats Hispanic as a racial category and we have counted
it as one of five large racial groups (White, Black, Asian/Pacific Islander,
Other, Hispanic). The people counted in the FSR Hispanic category are
not counted in any of the other racial groups if they chose to
be identified as Hispanic.
Because of this disparity,
comparisons of FSR Hispanic counts to EASI block group Hispanic counts
were not done. We chose to present EASI Hispanic population as a percent
of EASI total population as the Hispanic demographic metric.
