"I try to buy the food that will be good for my children. It might not be much, but it needs to be good."

Antelma tells her children it's important to eat fruits and vegetables and other foods that are low in calories. She wants her children to be strong. Antelma is learning about nutrition at the English as a Second Language class held at the Alisal Healthy Start program.

"I try to buy what I need most and what is healthy," she says. Antelma buys only the necessities and sticks with the most nutritious foods. Her advice to other moms is don't waste money on snacks and ice cream. Buy only healthy food.

Antelma's children Manuel, 11; Alberto, 10; Humberto, 10; Rogelio, 8; Jessica, 7 love bananas, carrots, and celery with peanut butter. Her family rarely eats out because it's too expensive, she says.

Twice a week Antelma participates in an aerobics class at Alisal Healthy Start. She said she feels better when she exercises. "One feels better when they can walk a lot as compared to just sitting in the house," she said. Her daughter participates in the Salinas Police Activities League ballet and her sons take karate through the same program.
