"I make sure the kids get their vegetables."

Debra is a single mother of two - son Diontae, 7, and daughter Chardae, 12. She says her children are her motivation for healthy living. "My kids are my life," she says. One way Debra promotes health in her family is to offer healthy foods.

"I always try to cook," says Debra. "I want the kids to have a home-cooked meal so I try to cook every night for them." Salads are big in her family with lots of cucumbers and tomatoes. Two of Diontae's favorite vegetables are green beans and corn. Debra grew up eating ham hocks and chitlins. Now she tries to bake most of her food.

Debra's mother had high blood pressure and diabetes. By listening to her mother's doctor, she has learned simple ways to change her family's eating habits. Debra believes those changes will have a lasting effect for her family's next generation.
