April Frank Back to previous page "You have to stay strong about your goals and about what you want to do." Every summer weekend, April and her children, Winter Fox, 8, and Sage, 4, participate in some type of event. Winter Fox ran in two Ancestral Runs (a traditional spiritual run) this year. Both boys are native dancers. This is not new for April. She played a variety of sports growing up. Diabetes is prevalent among Native Americans. April's mother died from it. She is very aware of what she needs to do to keep her family healthy and strong. Prayer gives her this strength. "I'm a really resourceful person," she says. April participates in the Share Program, a bulk food program throughout California. Members give $15 in cash or food stamps and receive $30 worth of food. Her sons also tend the family garden. April has developed many nutritious habits. "Our preference is chicken or fish and I usually bake it and all our vegetables are steamed," she said. Acorn soup and pine nuts, traditional Native American foods, are favorites of Winter Fox and Sage. April keeps homemade burritos in the freezer for easy meals and lots of fruit for snacks.
