In 1997/1998, an evaluation report was written for the Food on the Run (FOR) program. The purpose of the evaluation was to determine the level at which the program is addressing adolescent nutrition and physical activity issues at high school campuses by assessing the environment of the FOR sites.

An environmental survey was conducted with 12 FOR sites for the 1997/1998 school year. The following items were analyzed:
  • Healthy food options offered in the cafeteria;
  • Type and location of nutrition information posted;
  • Healthy eating and physical activity promotions seen or heard on campus; and
  • Physical activity options and facilities during and after school.
The results indicate that more work needs to be done in the area of physical activity, especially in increasing options for adolescents. There has been some improvement in the area of increasing healthy eating options, however, survey results indicate the need to make more sustainable policy changes.
